Results Are In: What Grade Would Your Workplace Get for Cleanliness?

Results day is one of those moments that sticks with you the nervous wait, the envelope, the grade that tells you exactly where you stand. It got us thinking: if your workplace opened an envelope today, what grade would it get?

Unlike exam results, a facilities “report card” isn’t marked once a year and forgotten. It’s being assessed every single day by staff, by visitors, by clients walking through your door. The good news? Unlike GCSEs, you can resit as often as you like. Here’s how to grade your own site, category by category.

 Reception & Front of House – First Impressions Count

This is the equivalent of your personal statement. It’s the first thing anyone sees, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Ask yourself:

– Are floors and glass entrance doors streak-free and dust-free?

– Is there a stale smell, or does the space feel fresh?

– Would you be comfortable leaving a client waiting here for ten minutes?

Grade A sites have a consistent daily cleaning routine for entrances, reception desks and communal seating not just a once-a-week once-over.

 Washrooms – The Subject Nobody Wants to Fail

Washrooms are the fastest way to lose marks. Staff and visitors judge an entire building on the state of its toilets, and it only takes one bad experience to stick.

Ask yourself:

– Are consumables (soap, paper, sanitiser) reliably stocked, or does someone have to chase it up?

– Is there a visible hygiene routine, or does it only get attention when someone complains?

A well-run washroom service covering sanitary disposal, air freshening and consumable replenishment turns this from a weak spot into a non-issue.

Floors & Carpets – Grading on Wear and Tear

Floors take the most punishment and show it the fastest. Scuffed hard flooring or matted, stained carpet drags the whole site’s grade down, even if everything else is spotless.

Ask yourself:

– Do floors look tired by Wednesday, even after a Monday clean?

– When did carpets last have a proper deep clean, rather than just a vacuum?

 High-Touch Surfaces & Hygiene – The Health & Safety Paper

Door handles, light switches, shared equipment, break room worktops these are the surfaces that carry the most germs and get the least attention.

– Is there a defined routine for high-touch points, or is it assumed someone “gets to it”?

– After illness moves through the office, is there a plan to bring hygiene levels back up quickly?
